Going to complete a 3G alt upgrade tomorrow. Help me out please.
I guess to keep it simple for my rookie a**. If I use 4 gauge from the alternator stud, directly to the battery do I need to do anything to the factory ground wires in the car? Or just leave them?
route a ground cable from the alternator housing to the frame.
Secondly, Can someone in simple terms tell me exactly what I need to do to wire this alt up? Here is what I think is correct.
Take 4 gauge directly from the battery to the stud on the alt, going to put in a 150A inline fuse.
The one factory alt plug, keep all wires intact and plug into the alternator.
Cut the connector off the other plug. Now, I believe the two black and orange need ring terminals, connect these two to the stud on the 3G alt as well. Correct? The remaining wire from this connector I connect to the little connector on the 3G alt? Stator?(SPELLING?)
get rid of those stock wires. the 4 gauge replaces them
Now I have read do not connect the black/white wires. I dont know where those are at or what they are talking about. I think I am on the right track.
So, do I do anything to the ground? What wires do I not use out of the factory alt connectors? Do I remove any wiring? Please a little more help on this. Thanks, Landon.

you can splice a wire for the stator from there to have a cleaner install.

I thought that I'd bring this thread alive again since it had a lot of useful information, my 3g alternator is supposed to get here tonight and I'll be using a lot of the info off of this thread to do the conversion. I'm not sure if anyone else is doing this swap soon or not but it's got a lot of good info in it. BUMP!!!

I have 2 200 amp alts and i can still draw them down 11 volts.I personally would take the 200 over the 130 any day

All of you guys going to spend that much money on some fancy brand name alt. are fools. Check to see if F150's, 250's with 302's had noticably larger output alts. I bet they did, it would be a factory bolt on piece and direct plug and play, you wouldnt have to install fuseblocks or anything else since theyre regulated right on the alt.

Thought I would post this. It is the most helpful site I've found about the 3G swap. Explains why to do certain things.

Hey guys,
I recently acquired a 89 GT with this conversion done, and the battery is not charging. The power wire from the alternator to the stator was not replaced, the twin-lead one. When I do a continunity check it comes back fine, but does that truly indicate it's good? When the car is running the voltage across the battery is around 11.7V. Thanks for any help.
