Buying Tips/Advice - What to look for?
I'm in the market for a used 89-93 mustang. Preferably a notch (coupe).
I want something that I can use as a daily driver in the summer. Eventually it will probaly turn into a weekend track car but it will serve for a couple of years as a summer car.
What should I be looking for? I don't want anything that has been beat on too hard. How can I tell if it has?
I understand that the front seat mounts can break/crack if driven hard. What other signs are there? Burnout bits in the wheel wells?
I found a 1993 notch black on black with 106k miles on it for $5400. Keep in mind that I am in Canada and cars are just more expensive. No rust, original paint, couple of small dings but overall pretty nice looking. 100% bone stock. Is it worth it? I realize it's getting to be a rare combo (notch, black on black, bone stock).
I don't mind working on brakes, bearing, suspension, water pumps and even timing chains. but I'm not up for rebuilding and engine. I just don't have that kind of space and time at the moment. 106k miles rebuild time?
Any help would be great. The lower mileage cars (60k miles and under) are getting to be pretty expensive, usually in the $9500 range. And using that as a daily driver is getting risky cause insurance will never pay out that much.
Any advice/help/tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I'd pay $5400 for a black notch in a heartbeat. It a Mustang of course it was beat on. But how much is the question. I always judge a car buy the interior also if it is clean and kept up it usually means they kept up on all the other maintenance on the car (just my theory). Also check the pinch welds on the bottoms of the doors they like to start rusting there. Also if the car has had a lot of owners it probably has been ridden pretty hard at some point.

106K is low mileage for a foxbody. The motor will be fine to 200+K miles if it is taken care of. Inspect the oil; it should be very clean. Check the cooling system, see if the color is right, shouldn't be a bunch of corrosion in the radiator itself. Do they have maintenance records? Oil change interval info?
The seat problem is not from excessive driving; it's a design weakness. Even my 4-banger i bought had the problem. the fracturing of the metal around the stud is due to getting in & out of the car. Right foot step in, rotate body to slide in, push back against seat back, drop body down, & finally bring right leg into car.... Lot's of pressure is applied to the seat back & mounting studs on all foxbodies....
Sounds like a good deal to me.... But if you doubt yourself.... Tell the owner your of intent to buy the car; but that you wish to take it to a mechanic for a final inspection before purchase. It'll cost you $100-$200 for a thourough checkup; but might save you allot more in the long run...... My 2 cents.
