Well my buddies car just had catastrophic engine failure. I am guessing the crank snapped in half or the mains came loose. The crank pulley can be moved up or down a few inches and back and forth a few inches. We did the basics to get it ready to pull the engine, remove radiator, set ps pump to the side, remove/label vacuum/electric connectors, remove the throttle body and intake manifold. I have a question though and will probably have a few more along the way.


1. Where are the hooks for pulling the engine? Either the previous owner did away with them or I am retarded . I haven't pulled a 5.0 before but it seems like it will be a piece of cake compared to pulling the motor out of my Supra.

2. Do you guys pull the tranny and engine out at the same time?

3. He has some shorty headers installed, should these clear once the engine is pulled forward. Or should we remove the headers?

What year supra do u have? LOL now ill get on topic for ya. the hooks should be bolted to the heads. one in the right rear, and the other is on the left front. If he has headers then the guy prolly got rid of the hooks. you dont need to take the headers off but you can if u want. I unbolt the trans i find it easyer.

I have an 87 Supra...currently going under the knife also . So if the hooks are gone where should I lift the engine from? BTW it has aftermarket aluminum Edelbrock heads if that makes a difference. He wants the trans out also since I think it needs the synchro's replaced, will I have to use a load leveler or can it be done with just a hoist and chain? Thanks for your help...

last time i pulled a motor i took the upper intake off and took 2 bolts out of the lower one acrost from the other and took a chain and layed it acrost the manifold, then put the bolts through the chain and back into the manifold. Now this is not the best way to do it and it makes me uneasy but thats life. U can get a lift plate to.

Ditto. Unbolted upper intake and bolted a chan on opposite ends to the lower intake where the upper bolted to. I took mine out with only the bell housing on it, seemed easier, not a good idea if you have a rad support tho, I didn't. Took me about 2.5 hours from the start to get the motor out. Absolutely the easiest engine I've ever pulled.

I recently just pulled my motor out of my 88 for almost the same reason. . . mine was because i had severe compression loss in one of the cylinders and i was overheating rediculously, so I think my head was leaking or I had a crack in a cylinder. . . .

ANYWAYS. . . I pulled tranny and engine out at the same time after I dropped Hpipe and pulled headers off. . . It's alot easier to align the spline from the tranny when it's out of the car and it doesn't take much more. Once exhaust is dropped, 4 bolts to disconnect driveshaft from rear end and slide it right out of rear of tranny, 2 bolts for tranny crossmember, speedo cable, clutch cable, a plug or 2 on the tranny and have a nice day. . .

When I pulled mine, I hooked the chains up to a couple of header bolts I put back into the holes on both sides of block. . .

I pulled my motor/trans out at the same time on my 88 GT . It was very simple.

I would definitely pull the engine and tranny at the same time. Same w/ putting them back in...

You can buy a lift plate that bolts to the top of the lower intake, that should make it pretty simple. If you want some extra clearance, removing the headers isn't a bad idea, but not a necessity.
