Low oil pressure - possible causes.

Low oil pressure - possible causes.
Hi
I have a '93 LX and the factory oil pressure gauge always reads low, just inside the NORMAL mark. Sometimes when driving at a constant speed the needle will move up a notch for some time. Then it may go up another notch or drop down. There is no real clue as to what it will do next. Sometimes it sits on the same reading for an hour.
Is this likely to be a mechanical problem or could it be the sensor going bad? If the oil pump needs replacing, does the motor have to come out or can it be replaced in situ?
Thanks

RE: Low oil pressure - possible causes.
Unscrew the sender and put an oil pressure gauge on it, electrical gauges are never accurate.
If I were to guess, I would say the pump should be able to be replaced inside the car by just unbolting the engine and jacking it up, but I'm not sure, never tried it in the car. Did mine on a stand.

low oil pressure can be caused by several factors. most inexpensive is an oil pressure sender unit. change that first. as for the gauge, i dont think thats your problem. oil pump is a proboble cause as well. it would be a hell of a trick to change it while motor is in car, even whith jacking the motor up. make sure the bottom of ur oil pan is not dented up. this can cause the oil pump pickup to become restricted (some people carelessly place a jack under the oil pan). lastly the motor can be getting worn out. in this case its time for a rebiuld. this can be done inexpensively for around 1,000 if you do it yourself. if you really want to verify the gauge operation you can unscrew the oil pressure sender and screw in a pressure gauge that reads to about 100 psi. fire the car up and check the pressure gauge. a good readind is about 40 psi. a poor reading will be about 25.
