Default Backfire through intake??

My friend has a 93 with basic bolt on's. Just recently his car is backfireing (poping) through the intake. I heard that it mean's it is running rich. I wasn't really sure so I thought that I would ask on here. Any info would help. Thanks in advance.

No.... It doesn't positively mean it's running rich. Timing could be off, a cat could be plugged, a plug could be fouled, the ignition has been weakened to where he has lousy spark, a burned valve\seat, a bad plug wire(looks good but has too many ohms resistance), a bad O2 that would possiblymake the EEC sense a lean condition & now is operating in "open loop" & running the injectors at 100% duty cycle.

I recommend you first inspect everything for the obvious. Cap, wires, plugs, timing, TPS voltage, clean out the throttlebody, clean the meter filiments. Then, I'd drive it & see if the problem goes away. If not; pull KOEO & KOER codes to help lead you too the problem. If the O2's are bad; there are several O2 codes the test will show.... IMHO.

Check your spark plug gap and make sure the plug wires go to the correct plug.

Backfiring through the intake usually means the opposite....fuel starvation...in addition to checking the plugs, wires, etc...you might want to check fuel pressure too....and second the DIY KOEO/KOER self-tests suggestion....My
