Colder plugs have a shorter path between the electrode and the threads that engage the cylinder head. The cylinder head acts as a heatsink to keep the plug the correct temperature. To cold will foul, carbon or soot will form and not burn off. If you have fouling or soot on the porcelain electrode insulator, the spark does not travel across the plug gap, but down the conductive path of carbon or soot seeking ground. Too hot, will get redhot and auto ignite the fuel mix prematurely and blow up your engine. If you compare a hotter ranger plug it is longer than a plug of a colder range.
