With a blown head gasket, you can pump your comression pressure past the gasket and into the antifreeze which causes pressure and the antifrezze to get pushed out into the overflow causing you to overheat. The pressure isn't great enough to go back though the gasket, so it dosen't have anywhere to go after the cap on the radiator closes. That is why you hear a puff later

It will take a lot of pressure, like 150 psi, same as a compression stroke. It would work. Just before I changed mine again, I was sure it couln't be b/c I checked my compression and still had no less than 150...Maybe look into a new cap for you radiator(stock psi) and a new thermostat?
