Are you sanding it down to the metal or just taking the clear coat off,I sanded my whole car down with 400 grit paper and used 320grit on an orbital sander for some spots,I gotta say ford uses one heavy a$$ clear coat..

now u understand y paint jobs cost so much money they are very labor intensive! but y are u taking it to the metal? is it rusty if not u dont need to take any of it to metal except repair areas! just wet sand the straight panels with some 400 grit paper! make sure u spray all bare metal areas with an acid etch primer!

im getting ready to start what your doing today. I just bought a 6" DA air sander. Are you using one of those or by hand? and i dont think the sandable primer is the same as acid etch primer either. From what i understand it should be fairly easy to get the clear coat sanded down, all you have to do is scuff it up so the new paint sticks. (at least thats what i though) What are you gonna do with those ponys you got on there since you got new rims?? Wanna get rid of em? Pm if you do.

you dont need to goto the metal, but you should get a nice dual action sander i always use 400 grit on the da before i end up spraying the only reason you would have to goto metal is for rust work and really bad dents that need alot of fixin

body work is what i do for a living. If your going to prime it and block it so its really straight you can get away with sanding with 180 grit. If the paint is in good condition already all you have to do is sand it with 320 and make sure there are no shiney spots. Make sure you featheredge all your rock chips otherwise they will all look like tiny dents. Any bare metal spots will need metal ecthing primer.

ok well if most of the panels that you sanded are metal showing you should get primer sealer and put a couple coats of that first then primer than you can block it out with 220 or 320 but at least you know for future reference you dont need to goto metal unless your media blasting the whole car to redo it,
