Default Hyper Pistons

OK. Lets talk Hyper pistons. Are they really THAT bad to use. I am looking to buy a 93 that obviously has hyper pistons in it... would I be OK with your average bolt ons (h/c/i) and a small shot (75-100 shot)? What about boost? Are they safe? Thanks guys.

For what you are talking about they are just fine, the hyper allows an engine builder to run a much tight piston to bore clearance, this is good on stock ma nufacturer motors to increase longevity. Whats nice about the hyper is alot of times when looking at older TRW forged pistons versus a new keith black hyper, the TRW's are very heavy and detrimental to bearing life. Bottom line is you are fine with what yu have outlined above. They got a bad rap because engine builders would use a tighter ring gap on the compression ring and the ring ends would butt together and usually pop the top of the piston off.

So basically I could run just as big of a shot on a hyper piston as a forged piston. Also, I should be OK w/ boost too? Any limits?

no no you cant run the same shot by any means, what you asked in your original question, the answer is yes. As for blowing big amounts of spray you need something like a Probe, Mahle forged piston by all means. You will be fine with boost, keep it reasonable and watch for detonation closely. 5-10lbs max. But people do crazy things also

Well, I wouldnt ever take a shot past 100-125 so I guess I will be OK. And if I ever did put some kind of supercharger on it wouldnt be anywhere past 10...

manufacturers switched to the hypereutectic pistons because they are harder (but not stronger), so they can be used with smaller clearances than forged pistons, which in turn allows for less blow-by and other similar stuff, which in turns eliminates some pollutants (that is probably the biggest reason for the switch) and power loss. they also claim that you can run the newer hypereutectic pistons for more mileage with all else equal.

Another thing I've seen is that the hyper internals are more likely than forged internals to send pieces through your cylinder walls during detonation or other such disasters. I think this is the main reason the manufacturers use forged instead of hyper internals for factory boosted applications, not neccessarily for strength only.

So bottom line, I will be OK w/ a small shot and the normal bolt ons (h/c/i). So will they be able to hold up against 400hp? I am using 400 as a number considering a nice h/c/i will put you in the 3's plus a 75-100 shot.

heads cam and intake have no bearing on the piston used unless we get up into the 12+ CR range. Your fine, dont lean it out and burn a hole through the piston
