5.0 Heads
Hey guys, I know tihs has been asked a millions times. I search the web forums and I cant find any info on how I can tell what kind of heads I have. Basically im looking for some information on casting numbers of different types of stock heads gt40's, e7's anything Ford makes. Im trying to figure out what i have the drivers side head has an upside down?! 17 toward the bumper and a 14 toward the firewall. Im just really trying to learn and figure out what is what so I can do some junk yard search and also if I find anything used local or on ebay. Thanks in advance and sorry if this is ANOTHER duplicate question!

RE: 5.0 Heads
if your looking for some junk yard heads look for explorers with v-8's in them. the earlier models (94-97 1/2) came with gt 40's, the same ones used on the 93 cobra (except for the 1.7:1 rockers, these heads used the same 1.6:1 pedestal mount rockers that are on the e7's that you have now). these heads do flow better than stock. the 97 1/2 and later explorers and mountainers came with gt 40p's on them (except with the same rockers you have now). the gt 40p's flow better than the regular gt 40's. now the gt 40's have 3 vertical bars on the front and rear of the heads like so---lll. the gt 40p's have 4 vertical bars on the front and rear of the head like this---llll. you can also take off the valve covers and look for the stamp in the rocker valley for the markings to tell which one they are.
i got gt 40p's off of a 99 mountanier and they do help out and everything was a direct swap. the only problem was that i had to modify my stock exhuast header on the driver side on the #5 and #7 so the spark plug boots could fit.

Wow thanks for the information, another question on a side note I am going to be buying a new intake upper and lower, but I dont want to install it untill I get the heads figured out and decide what im going to get. I figure that the new intake wont make much difference with the e7s wich seems like what I have now. What do you t hink about the afr 165's?

RE: 5.0 Heads
afr 165s are bad ***. but if you're looking for performance heads and are on a budget, check out this place i just found. tristatecylinderheads.com.
also, the gt40 heads will have a GT stamped on them, along with the 3 bars. the gt40p's will have a gtp and 4 bars. the e7s will have an e7te.

ive done a bit of research,
and from what ive read and looked at,
the trick flow twisted wedge heads flow the best,
but i suppose theres some rpm/powerband **** to worry about,
like where they flow the most and blah blah,
but im thinking of getting some heads myself and im pretty sure im gonna go with some twisted wedges

Are the stamps on the inside or the outside? And what does the 14 and upside down 17 mean on mine? I wish I could find a chart with picttures(LOL I know im dreaming). Well im debating on what to do, if I can find some polished up gt40's for 300 or so I would just grab those if not im gonna pickup the afr's.

RE: 5.0 Heads
the GT and GTP will be stamped where all the rocker arms are.
the site i gave you has heads on it for like 800 bucks that have specs similar to trickflows and afrs.
and by the way, canfields flow better than trickflows, and theres a great story that goes along with it involving a guy's design not getting used at trickflow, so he quit and took the design to canfield.
canfield actually had the first "twisted wedge" design. thats why canfields are badass, and expensive.

RE: 5.0 Heads
You know why I didnt want the Twisted Wedge is because I read that because of the Wedge I would have to get my pistons worked on to make the not hit? Im not sure and maybe that is wrong information, the wedges are about 400 cheaper than the afrs.
