Default shifting/2nd gear issue continued..

this is one of the last remaining problems i'm still trying to figure out on this fox of mine. first, i know that the transmission and synchros are good. please do not mention those as possibilities, although i know it seems like the first reaction to give. but i can always get the car to shift into 2nd gear wonderfully if i try... so i know everything is good there.

basically, whenever i go to shift into 2nd gear, i have to pull back on the shifter forcefully (in one solid, swift motion) and angle it to the left more than i should. i can shift into every other gear with my pinky finger if i wanted to, but on 2nd gear, i have to really pull down hard. if i don't, it will look like the shifter is in gear, but then either pops out right away or when i go to accelerate.. i find out i'm still in neutral. oh yeah, the shifter itself is stock.

any good ideas?

Just a shot out of the Blue.
What shifter are you running?
If it is stock how is the plastic bushing in the shifter cup?

you have 3 rods running through the top of the trans that hold the forks. it sound slike one of them might be tweaked a little.

ok.. is there any way i can find out for sure? i was thinking about unbolting the plate that holds the shifter down to the chassis... but someone warned me against that since there are apparently some clips or nuts or something that i could possibly lose and would be very hard to find to replace.

lol.. well.. obviously i want to, but i need to get the necessities worked out first. if one of these rods/forks are bent or something, it won't matter what shifter i have in there.. 2nd will still be a b*tch.
