oil pressure help
i was driving long distance the other day and my check oil light came on, then i noticed that the oil pressusre gauge was kind of low, at like the N in NORMAL. i pulled over and checked let the car sit for a little while, then i checked the oil and it was at a good high level. i proceded to drive it home but kept my eye on the oil pressure gauge the entire time. Has this happened to anyone else, is this normal, the car has 116,000 miles on it, if that means anything, could it be the oil pump? any information please. thank- you sean

RE: oil pressure help
The Stock Oil Pressure Sending Unit Is On The Driver's Side Front Of The Block. It Is Right Down By The Number Five Exhaust Port On Your Headers. You Say That You Were On A Long Trip When Your Oil Pressure Fell Off? How Long Ago Was It That You Changed Your Oil? When You Approach The 3k Mile Mark On Your Oil, It Begins To Thin Out. What Started Out As Some 20w50, Ends Up Like 5w30. After You Have Been Driving For A Long Time, Your Oil Gets Real Hot And Goes Through Something They Call Viscosity Breakdown. This Just Means That Your Oil Gets Real Thin. The Thinner Your Oil Gets, The Lower Your Oil Pressure Gets. This Is The Same Exact Opposite Reason That When Your Car Is Cold In The Morning Your Oil Pressure Is Like At 55 or 60 PSI. If Your 302 Only Has 116k On It, I Would Imagine That Your Oil Pump Is Probably Fine Because I Have Seen Mustangs With 200k+ Miles On Them And They Stil Have Pretty Good Oil Presure. If You Are Thinking About Rebuilding, I Would For Sure Get A New Aftermarket Oil Pump. I'm Pretty Sure That Your Stang Has A Low Oil Pressure Igninion Shut Off. Basiclly, If Your Oil Pressure Gets Below A Predetermined PSI, It Will Shut Down To Protect Your Engine. For About $100 You Can Can Get An Auto Meter 2 5/8 External Mechanical Oil Pressure Guage. This Is A Much More Accurate Way Of Monitoring Your Oil Pressure. Plus, It Looks Pretty Cool Also. Hope This Helps You Out.

RE: oil pressure help
I would get a good aftermarket gauge and monitor the pressure. My 88 has over 108,000 miles on it and still puts out 50 psi when the oil is hot and I'm running Royal Purple synthetic in it. oil pressure naturally drops off over time as the bearings wear and the clearances open up, but you need to get a good gauge reading to really be sure what you have instead of using the stock gauge. if you mount the gauge inside the car, be sure to get the braided SS hose kit to install it as you don't want the little plastic line that comes with it to break and fill your inside with oil. the hose kit is about $42, but well worth it.

RE: oil pressure help
I run 60PSI at startup and after its warmed up it settles to 50psi at idle and around 70-75psi at about 3,000 rpm.I run 15/50 mobil 1 synthetic. But i have a high volume oil pump too.A melling to be exact.
We need more info what mods are done? How long has the oil been in it?How do you drive?
Another thing to lok at would be the oil pump driveshaft.
Its no thing for a stock one to twist up.
