Carb kick down, and Air cleaner Question
My carb has a hard time kicking down to idle. I am constantly having to tap the gas. Sometimes it sticks at 2000 RPM. Can someone take a look at the carb picture I have attached, and tell me how to fix this. My last stang had an Edelbrock carb, and all I had to do was get a tighter spring.
Also, take a look at this crappy air cleaner. I would like to replace it with a simple Edelbrock or similar unit. However, I was wondering what use the lines have coming out of the air cleaner and into the fender walls. They were just open on my last stang. The third picture represents this. Is ok to just yank this heap of a cleaner out and replace it?

RE: Carb kick down, and Air cleaner Question
The idle/kick down issue your having may be due to the throttle cable sticking in the sheathing.
The aircleaner:
The lines going to it are vacuum lines. I forget what they are for but I think it's pollution junk. Plug the lines and get a regular filter assembly and call it a day. If your looking for a new carb I'd go Holley.

should I just spray some wd-40 in onto the sheathing then? The idle does seem to be sticking more and more, so I am thinking the throttle is gumming up or something.
Also, if you have a Holley you would like to donate, I wouldnt mind
That is in the future though!

haha grimace i think a 750 is a little much for his car. but 83 just to let you know those carbs have a recall on them from the throttle sticking just ditch it i had it on my 84 they are the worst holley's made thats why they are discontinued now. get a holley 600cfm with vac secondaries and as for an air cleaner get the ford racing one those little lines are for the choke and they are only good if you still have those tubes that are connected to the exhaust manifold im assuming that you have shorty headers now so just ditch that cleaner assembly

RE: Carb kick down, and Air cleaner Question
The Big tubes are air intake tubes, the vacuum lines lines I believe go to the charcoal canister, which is part of the emissions system. Just replace your stock air cleaner with an open element style, and as for a carb a 750 IS WAY TOO MUCH, for a mostly stock motor. Holley makes a good product, so does edelbrock, go to www.summitracing.com and se if they have any remanufactured units, theyll be A LOT cheaper than brand new units. Another thing, you can take the tubes that were in your fenders (the 3" ones) reroute them through your foglight holes to blow nice cool air on to your front brakes, that would really help out in stopping power seeing as the factory front brakes are only 9".

do not get an edlebrock carb they are only a crapy carb with a fancy name. if forget which company they took over but all they did was give it a new name and a new look same crapy standard carb inside they are not worth the money get a holley if you are to get anything

RE: Carb kick down, and Air cleaner Question
i cant really tell from the pictures if you have a dual or single snorkel air cleaner, if it is a dual, i would just have that piece cleaned up and use its ability to draw in colder air from the fenders than an open element cleaner that sucks in all the hot engine air
