does your a/c have anything in it right now? if it does you can put on the fittings and add the r 134 on top of the r 12.. you dont have to evacuate the system... if it has no pressure you will have to have a shop evacuate it then recharge it...

The "jet looking things" are the new size fittings for the high and low sides of the 134 system. r12 fittings are a different size is all. The o rings need to be replaced. You first need to evacuate the system then pull a vacuum for 15-20 minutes. If it does not hold a vacuum you have a leak. You can then add dye and use a black light to find the leak. Repair as necessary and pull another vacuum. Once the system is up to snuff you need to add oil to the system, then charge with the 134. This is not really something you can do with a kit and you should take what you have and give it to a shop. You need to be mobile refrigerant certified to legally work on ac anyway.

From what I understand having talked to some people who have retro'd theR134a, it's not quite as cold as the old r12 setup but I think that could just be a matter of the differences in the pressure the original compressor can supply.
