Default Oil In upper Intake.

I took the cover uff my upper intake and found oil in my upper intake. It smells like oil / gas mix. pic 1 shows what Im talking about. If you look at pic 2 you can see how thick it is. It is clearly oil, but it has a smell of gas. pic 3 shows where it could be coming from. The hole marked ??? connects to the back of the lower intake. What could cause this? Is it common or should I be worried? Any help is welcome.

Thanks, mike

The hose is connected to your pcv valve in the back. Not questioning your knowledge (pcv valve should be a small metal cilynder connected to the hose first and then on the intake) Check to see if it really is connected to it. you might be missing your pcv valve and shooting oil up the intake.

To answer your question about the heads, I have TFS trick flow heads with 3 stage polished and ported. stainless steel 2.02" intake valves and 1.90" exhaust valves. Answer your question?

even with only a few miles on it, every engine has some blow-by gases that get by the piston rings and into the crankcase. the PCV valve system uses intake manifold vacuum to suck these vapors out of the crankcase and into the intake where they get reburned again to reduce pollution. what you're seeing is most likely normal as the vapors contain a mixture of unburned gas and oil vapor from crankcase which in your case happens to enter the upper intake at a point where it looks like they can condense out of the air stream and collect in the bottom of the intake. I don' think this happens with a stock intake as the PCV hose connects down lower in the upper intake where the flow is near vertical and it sweeps the stuff into the runners to the cylinders. I wouldn't obsess over it right now, it could be the rings are still getting seated with that little bit of mileage. If you don't want this collecting in the intake, you could add some 3/4" connections on the tops of the valve covers and run a hose line down to similar connections on the exhaust in the H-pipe where the suction pulses will pull the vapors out into the exhaust instead of the intake and then you could just plug off the PCV line and plug the hole in the back of the block where it sits in the rubber grommet. you will also need to add some breathers in the top of the valve covers to let fresh air in to the crankcase so the suction can pull it out through the exhaust. this is an old drag racers trick to reduce the backpressure on the underside of the pistons when they move down on the power stroke to squeeze some more HP out of the motor. nowadays with the high tech, racers actually run a vacuum pump off the crankcase to do the same thing and they blow the gases into separator to keep oil off the race track. this allows them to run low tension piston rings to reducer friction in the cylinders and make more HP.

Thanks alot roundmanracing for the info. I have a recently rebuilt engine (4.8k miles on it) what you said in the previous post is more than likely the case. thanks for all your help.
