Default AFR 185 deal

I have a buddy selling a set of 185's fairly cheap. I wanted to build a mild carb'ed 306 with a trickflow stage 1 cam, and a set of AFR 165's.

My question is, will the 185's be too much for what im going to do with the car? What cam would be the best match for those heads? and should i just keep looking for the 165's?

185's will be good if you decide to go boosted or higher compression

other than that they may be a bit big

id say depending on how cheap u can get them they may or may not be too much... could always sell em on ebay or something and buy 165s... that is if ur gettin em especially cheap.

Are AFR's really worth the money? Do they outperform Trick Flow? I've heard alot about these heads, but I don't know much about them.

I'm debating on whether I should go all Trick Flow (H/C/I) or run AFR heads with maybe a crane cam or something. Which do you think would provide better results?

yes they do outperform them

trickflow rates their top end kit at 350 crank hp
muscle mustangs and fast fords magazine (i think) built a stock bottom end motor with afr 165's and made 400 crank hp

What else did it have besides the heads?

Goto www.trickflow.com and read the technical specs, it shows what they did to get the 350hp. (10 degrees timing, 9.5:1 compression 1.6 RR's, etc.) Who knows what all went into that AFR motor...

+1 what Adder said. They did it with a stock GT engine, i think some kind of carb setup, and 1.7rr. Stock GT cam. Here's the link:

Seems kinda funny to me that they can add 50hp with just a carb and intake on it. Not to mention the fact that they make the powerband 2k rpm longer. Whatever tho, I'm not convinced that they are really that much better than everything else, with smaller valves even...
