There shoul be a plug near the firewall on the left side facing the engine. the plug should have a cover and writing on it OBD I . that is where you plug in your scanner to read all the codes. Now most of the the OBD I scanner will not give you the actuall wording of what your problem code is. Most will blink and you will have to count how many blinks they make so you can read the code in a book which comes with the scanner.

Hey, you don't even need a code scanner I don't think. I don't have my car or manual here with me so I can't remember exactly how, but with the plug he's talking about is a small one, and there is you can use them with an anologue volt ohm meter or there is a way to make the check engine light flash, if you wanna save a few bucks, but still gotta count flashes...sorry I'm not more help, can't remember how to do.

88's don't have the OBD computer system, they use an EECIV system. you might be able to borrow a code scanner from Auto Zone, give them a try.

THe "do it yourself" idea works on my Toyota truck.....havne't tried my Stang yet.

Provided you know what terminals to use.....you stick a paper clip into two of the terminals, and it routes it to make the check engine light blink.

I haven't figure it out on a Stang yet.......surely someone on here knows.
