The car is currently running extremely rich. In less than a min, a 2 1/2 car garage is full of fumes and you have to get out. This is with both the big doors open. Every time I start the car up a big puff of black smoke comes out. Then, I can barely give it any gas. If I try to go anything past 1/4 throttle, it will fall on its face and die. It will idle sometimes, but when it does its around 2000-2500. I can bring the RPMs all the way up if I ease into it.

Setup:
Victor Jr heads
GT40 intake
Big custom cam (555/565 lift)
24 lb injectors
Custom chip
plus all other normal bolt ons

It just started doing this out of the blue. I have changed the plugs and O2 sensors. I have changed out the MAF and computer with a known good one. Any ideas?

Is your MAF calibrated for 24's?

Sorry forgot to mention, it is calibrated for 24s. The car has set for a week without the battery hooked up, so the ECM is reset. The fuel pressure holds steady (set for 40 at WOT) and does not drop off after the engine is shut off. Still sound like the fuel pressure regulator?

I have a solution for ya......... Tear out that crappy fuel injection, get yourself a Victor Jr. intake (4bbl), a nice 750 double pump carb and vuala.....itll work. Not to mention itll be faster than with the GT40 anyway. Just my .02 ......can you tell Im not a fan of Fuel injection.

That has crossed my mind to P, what exactly does it take? Besides the intake, carb and throttle cable. I know I can get a throttle cable off an 85.

Just the intake, carb, throttle cable, and an air cleaner. Thats about it. You use the disty you got, Im assuming its the one with the module mounted to it (the factory 86 one). I just like carbs better because theres no throttle lag. When you touch the pedal it revs....FAST! Not to mention its WAY cheaper, the victor intake new will prolly run ya 250 or so and you can find remaned edelbrock carbs on summits website probably for around 150-250.

I am wondering about the fuel delivery aspect. Do they make a regulator that is in the carb range? I dont even know what the range would be for a carb. This is for the 88.

Yeah they make an inline fuel regulator. Its in the neighborhood of 7-8 psi, (possibly more for that setup) not very much. Does the 88 have the ignition module mounted to the side of the disty?......been a little while since I worked on one of them.
