I read somewhere than retarding a stock cam could help performance a bit... can anyone vouch for that?

Yes it does... Depending on what you done to it already... Get a tuner and it will help retard right.... On stock motors it usually gives an extra 1-2 ftlbs... And it also a lot less detonation with a blower....

I would think so... If you can free up on a complete stock motor than on yours yes...

advancing or retarding the cam in relationship to the crankshaft just moves the torque and horsepower peak up or down in the rpm range, it doesn't really add any of either but you can move the peak to where you want it to be within certain limits.

Cam timing is critical for all cars but in a slightly modified 5.0 a think youd be waisting time and money. and like roundman said within certian limits 3 or 4 degress either way in most cases. cam timing is for more advanced engines.
