I was wondering what was the reason for using 4 lug wheels? I know it's fairly easy to do a conversion but I can't think of a reason why they didn't use 5 lugs from the factory.

it was cheaper, in the 80's american car makers were really starting
to feel the jap pinch, and on top of that just were not putting quality where it
was needed.

Besides that, 4 lug wheels have worked for 20+ years, why change it?
There are nice aftermarket wheels out there for a 4 lug. You just have to buy them.......

BTW, Ford used 4 lug wheels even on the original 1964 Mustang as well as the Pinto's and Mustang 2......

and 4lug was more then enough for a stock mustang

and you could ask "what were they thinking?" about a lot of things.....
why is the block only rated to 500hp or so?
why is the trans just as weak?
why is the motor only 302ci
why are the rear control arms garbage?
why does the body flex so much?

because most people dont want an all out drag car or road race car. for some, just owning a mustang is enough thrill (the reason they make v6 mustangs lol).

Dont know about that last sentence. I love having our Mustang but im not going to race it (full blown) may take it down a strip here and there but nothing much. Guess I want more that just the "thrill", I want a powerful thrill.

That's like asking why hubcaps were ever invented.

Things change. One of the things that changed was the move from 4 to 5 lugs. It's really that simple.
