Default RE: Aluminum drive shaft questions.

ORIGINAL: Twisted

I'm thinking my U-joints might need replacing, and was considering just getting a whole aluminum drive shaft. My questions are:

1. What is the weight savings in switching to an aluminum number?
2. Will I notice the weight savings in acceleration?
3. What is a normal price to pay for such a shaft?

Thanks.
1. About 15 lbs. (my aluminum driveshaft weighs 16 lbs. and the stock one, I've have heard, weighs just over 30 lbs.)
2. Shouldn't notice a difference in acceleration unless you change something else in the rear end at the same time.
3. $230 for an FRPP alum. shaft

I got lucky when I baught mine...just before the price went to 250(already at that in summit) it was up for 150 in jegs so I snagged one. I like it, might just be in my head, but I went out and ragged on it pretty hard after the install to test it out and I cherpped the tires 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th...couldn't do that before...4th was a bonus. I got a new one to stop my vibrations and at the time it was only a few bucks more that rebuilding and balancing the old. I don't know if I would pay 250 for it now, think I would just fix the old one and keep the extra 100....but it sounds cool saying I have an aluminum shaft

Thanks for the perspectives, everyone. Good info. I guess I'll get one in an attempt to cure this mild vibration at certain speeds. Gotta find a job first.

any time you can lighten up rotating mass will help with acceleration...

Sorry to hijack**

393bird, just wanted to take a minute and say that the side exhaust is kick ***. I saw it on another forum, don't recall what one but anyway... Looks really good. Best looking 'bird I've seen in a long time.
Thanks. The exhaust turned out better than I though it would.

If it were to cost $300 and improve ET by .10 that could be a good deal.
I've known lots of folks to spend way more than that trying to get a tenth.......
