I don't think a vacuum leak will cause a car to run rich...but...it will definately mess your idle up.

There are any number of things that would cause a car to run rich. You either need to go through and check everything we've mentioned so far or have it looked at by a shop. I had a car once that was running rich I changed the temp sensor (on more than one car) and that helped a little but there was other things wrong too. All we can do is guess at this point. All you can do by yourself is just start checking things. That's the plight of the shade tree mechanic. Also, the check engine light on OBD computers don't come on unless there is something seriously wrong. OBDII is alot more specific. So you can't necessarily depend on the computer. There are many other people on this forum with much more knowledge than I, like roundman, you would think he invented the Fox Body as much as he knows, so that's about all I can tell you.

well thnx for your help....

on the computer thing, I had autozone run I diagnostics on it....and it came back a code 87....and their computer listed like 165 things that COULD be wrong...so I decided to start with the fuel filter....then the next option is the fuel pump itself....unfortunately I haven't been able to install it do to time constraints and the filter being under the car

do I really have to "properly" relieve the fuel pressure

It's a really good idea, unless you like a face full of gasoline. It's a simple process anyway.
