Gear oil......

RE: Gear oil......
It won't hurt anything to change it.
Remove the 10 bolts that hold the cover on.
Pry (gently so you don't distort the cover) the cover off of the housing.
Fluid should be gushing out at this point.
Take some brakclean and spray the housing out real good, look for chunks of junk.
Clean the mating surface of the cover and housing real good with a razor blade/scraper or scotch brite.
Apply a bead of silicone to the housing around the perimeter and around the bolt holes. Some people use a gasket also but it's up to you.
Carefully position the cover on the housing so you don't mess up all the silicone you just applied.
Start the bolts and tighten them like you would lug nuts. They don't need to be "2 grunts" tight, just a little past "snug"...maybe 1 grunt.
On the left front of the housing you will find a plug, it is 3/8 drive (on mine anyway).
Remove the plug and add the gear oil until it is even with the bottom of the hole. If I recall it will take about 3 1/2 pints. If you have a limited slip diff you will want to add 4oz of friction modifier. OR buy gear oil with it already in it, I hear royal purple has it in it.
Put the plug back in.
Drink a beer and look for leaks.

I'll offer these words of "wisdom".
Experience is the best teacher.
You learn more by doing than by reading.
If you can score a $100 car to "experiment" on and have a place to put it I say go for it. There are some things like changing the gear oil in your axle you really can't screw up. But if it would make you more comfortable to "practice" on something go for it.
