Default rough cold start and loss of power?

every single time i start my car cold it idles rough then cuts off then the next time i start it it's fine.

i looked under the hood and i saw that one of the spark plug wires was up against a header and melted a little.

could this be a problem... i looked in my chilton's manuel and it said something bout a fuel pump may be bad (i don't know if mines been replaced or not... or when) or a vacuum leak, or battery is almost dead. should i just replace my fuel pump and check the hoses?

A new fuel pump would be something to consider for prevenative maintanence but it doesn't sound like your problem. The plug wires maybe contributing to the problem but they really don't sound like it either, I would highly reccomend changing them. I would start with cleaning your MAF wires. Also, take your TB off and spray it down with some carb or brake cleaner.
