Default Speedo acting up

I just bought a 91 hatchback Gt a week ago and my speedo is acting strange. While driving at normal highway speed(60-70)the speedo reads 120-140 and bounces all over the place. The cruise seems to work fine and the speedo cable turns while driving.I'm assuming I need a new speedo, but maybe someone else has had this problem before and has a simple fix.Any help will be appreciated.

check and make sure you dont have a guage layover like white face guages you know? and if you do make sure they're the right ones. also look under the car at the speedo cable and make sure its not kinked or bent or anything.

i would bet you my next paycheck that the driven gear is chewed up.

it's on the trans, at the end of the speedo cable, held into the trans w/ a small bolt (10 mm i think??)
then c-clipped to the cable....takes about 2 minutes to swap it out.

well I took out the speed sensor and the gear was fine.I replaced the sensor with one I had previously bought and no fix.The cable seems to be fine so I guess that narrows it down to the speedo itself.Unfortunately it's the 140mph expensive one.I guess I'll just watch ebay for a goos deal.

I had the same problem with mine. I took the speedo out and cleaned it up on the backside. Also used some lithium grease on it and shot some down in the cable! It works perfect now.

Yeah, I had a bouncy speedo needle. I would just try removing the speedo cable and greasing it up. Check both ends of the cable to make sure the plastic ends aren't worn down and check the cable itself for flaws. If everything looks good, just reinstall and see how she goes. If that doesnt fix it and you checked the speedo gear in the trans, sounds like it is probably the head in the speedometer itself. Then like you said, just watch ebay.
