Changing my clutch, need advice

Changing my clutch, need advice
Im thinking of changing my clutch myself. I've never actually done it, all the info on changing it im getting from a Hayes manual. I just wanted any pointers on how to do this, things like problems i might come across, or techniques to make the job easier. I also would like specific help with mounting the pressure plate. the manual says that each bolt has to be mounted in a criss-cross pattern, a quarter of a turn at a time at a specific torque. this is the only real issue i have.

Ive done about 5 clutch jobs, ive never actually had to do the 1/4 turn a time thing. I just put the bolts in the pressure plate, tighten them down ratchet tight in a criss cross fashion, then torque them to 35ft lbs. Have two people to help take the tranny out and put it back in. Your going to need them. Oh, and drain the tranny first, cause as soon as the tail of it drops down, the fluid is going to go everywhere. Make sure to get an alignment tool with the clutch kit if it isnt already included, ask though, cause a few ive bought didnt come with one, so make sure. Other than that, i cant think of anything that out of the ordinary...its straight forward.
Oh and...make sure no matter what clutch you buy, especially the King Cobra, buy a seperate, stock 5.0 Throw Out bearing, i think they're about $13-$15. Most of the Throw out bearings that come with the kits are POS's and start to whine about 4 weeks after they're installed, no matter how you install them, ive never had any issues putting a stock piece in with a Ceneterforce, King Cobra, Spec, etc. It doesnt work any different in my experience and the stock ones are beefier.

Change your piolt bushing too. Its a little bit of work getting it out but will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. I was "convinced" not to and ended up dropping the trans again 2 weeks later. It is not fun with 2 people. Try to have 3 like the post above says. Just take your time and follow everything step by step. I used the manual and my clutch works great now. Good luck.
P.S. You feel a lot better about your car if you do the work yourself

Get your flywheel resurfaced unless you plan on replacing it and put in a new rear main seal. To remove the pilot bearing if you don't have a puller, fill it with grease and then use a socket that slips in there snug and hit it with a hammer....the grease will push it out...works good. Good luck
