on my chevy i started at 8 and vacuum advanced it. it started out with um 15 inches of vac and we went up to about 17 or 18 i think and ended up bein 16 degrees before. if you're using a light i'd probably start at base timing and bump it up a few degrees, hit the throttle and listen for pinging. i was told with a carb you want it to ping a little bit on accel, but not to much and not too long. and just on accel.

Tune car with a dwell tach and a vacumn gauge.
Use timing to check/verify...
With car running at idle, look and see what vacumn reads. Move the dizzy untill you get highest vacumn reading. Now check with timing light and see what the timing is in degrees.
That's how I've been doing them 35+ years, works good........
