Default Tank fuel pump change

My 1993 5.0 Hatchback needs a new tank fuel pump. Would I be crazy or lazy for cutting a hole in the floor (carefully), do my pump change, then pop rivet or sheet metal screw a patch on top. I'd seal it and fire tape it naturally. I may just have to change the plug sleeve which melted, and clean the pins on the pump recepticle. So I may have to get there more than once. I can see the location by pulling out a harness plug in the floor which happens to be next to it. I bought this '93 new and love it, but i still don't mind a what, 3-4 inch access panel in the floor. Then if it ever fails on the road, I have options. Anyway, do people do this?

I wouldn't cut a hole in the floor as this could lead to exhaust fumes getting into the car no matter how well sealed the hole is. a hole would also weaken the unibody structure of the car also. recommend you just drop the tank and replace the pump as this is the best way to do this and you won't be cutting up the floor to do it either.

not to mention the f-ed up angle you have to take the pump out at. i did mine a couple weeks ago and it isn't hard at all i had it done in less than an hour,,,but i do have a suggestion, replace your filler pipe gromet,,mine was old and cracked and i didn't replace it,, well needless to say the first time i filled it up i had a gas trail follow me home,, and be aware that your fuel lines run very close to the exhaust keep them secured away from it after the repair. just a couple pointers for ya
