Default fog lights on with headlights off? 91GT

I have a 91 GT with fog lights. The problem is that from the factory they come wired so that they only turn on with the headlights on. I want to be able to use the fogs by themselves, or with the parking lights on, or with the brights on.

I tried use a test light on some of the wires behind the headlight and fog switch but was unable to come up with the right combination to make it work.

Can anyone help? Much appreciated

there were several good reasons why the factory set-up won't let you do this so I would leave then alone. fog lites should not be used unless it is foggy, running them all the time just throws more light out into the eyes of oncoming drivers making it harder for them to see and you certainly don't need fog lights with the high beams on either, so the wiring sizes are such that they cannot handle the current flow of both the high beams and fog lites on at the same time.

I agree that is unsafe, but i am interested more in running the fog lights with parking lamps in the fading light where you dont need your lights on but it lets other people see you. Plus it would look cool i know i know safety first

blah blah blah...

The reason they're done the way they are from the factory is because silly state laws that have been on the books for years dictate it.

Fog lights don't really do jack **** from the factory. They throw a little extra light on the ground in front of you, but it doesn't really help at any appreciable speed. To be most effective, they should be yellow (reduce the blue wavelengths which reflect/refract more, making it harder to see) and they should be the only lights on. Having the headlights on defeats the purpose of trying to get light under the fog.

Properly aimed foglights don't create any glare for oncomming drivers. It's the jackasses with improperly aimed fogs, modified lights, or driving lights who create the problems.

If you were asking about a Subaru 2.5RS, I could whip out the instructions I created to do exactly what you're asking, but I haven't looked into it on my 5.0 because I removed the fogs. (weight).

The way the RS worked is that the fog light relay was only energized (+12v) when the headlights were on, and the switch had 2 grounds. When the high beams were turned on, one of the grounds went +12v and the fogs shut off. To fix it, I just made the grounds on the switch a chassis ground (removed the switched one), and I took an ignition-switched +12v for the fog light relay.

Try poking around with a test light or multi-meter, if you've got any wire-sense to ya at all, you should be able to figure it out.

http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/fog2.htm Might help a little bit. Instead of the vert switch you could just use anything that's hot when the car is on and/or running.

It can be done if you rewire them through a separate switch. I say separate switch because messing with the stock wiring is bad juju. It's an easy way to cause problems.

Also "parking lights" are for parking. (ie.. on the side of a unlit road for a few minutes)
"fog lights" are for fog.

It does look cool with the fogs on, especially if you get the yellow factory replacements. We all make fun of the ricers, lets none of us be the idiots who pull out in front of you during dusk with their parking lights on. Or who you almost hit while changing lanes because they are driving w/ their parking lights on. The excuse during dusk of "I can see" does'nt cut it. Your lights are so others can see you!

So as I get off my soap box, a good place for the switch is in your ashtray. Makes it real easy to hide the wires, and within your reach while driving.
