I'll chime in too...

10w30 is good.
10w40 is good.
5w30 is also good.

I wouldn't stay away from higher mileage oils. What I would stay away from is the straight 30's/40's and 20w50.

I cannot tell you how many "old timers" come in all the time and ask for 20w50 in their 2005 Explorers or Expeditions. It's the Old School of thought that tells guys that thicker oil is better. WRONG!! I cannot tell you how many "charactors" also come in asking for thicker oil now that their car has 100k + miles on it. Again...WRONG!!! Why put a thicker oil in a car that is pushing higher mileage?? I've always wanted (after I slap the everlasting crap out them) to ask them what was their reasoning behind this madness. Was it because the engine is "broken in now" and that they can run whatever the hell they want? Is it because that's what they put in their tractor back on the farm? Hey this isn't Kansas anymore and you can't put that stuff in your car anymore.

It's almost like customers buy a new $45k truck, drive off the lot, throw the owners manual out the window and then think that they already know everything.

Hey, have you ever wondered why Service Advisors have computers at their stations?? Yeah, it's to jack people up faster on a ticket, but it's also so they can look up TSB's and find out what the manufacturer is going to rec based on the millions of dollars that they spent BUILDING the damn car. Or maybe the old 10w40 has given them issues so they have changed a rec to show a better product for the use?

I'm actually happy to see these questions since there are people who genuinely care about their cars more than they do their egos.

Good job fellas,
Ivan

PS-If you like, ask for 20w50 next time you pull in for service somewhere. See what they tell you....

You should select your oil based on outside temps. The hotter it is outside the thicker youll want because, obviously, the higher the temp the thinner the oil. Basically, if you live in Arizona in the summer time there is nothing wrong with runnin 20w50, as it will already be hot enough to where gettin it where it needs to be isnt a problem. ANother thing you should base your oil on is the type of driving you do, if you mainly just putt around and just every now and again get on it, the reccommended oil should be just fine, but if you tend to get on it more, youd obviously want a thicker oil. Thats why race cars will run 20w50, if not thicker. It helps keep engine temps down, ever see what 5w30 looks like when its hot, it has the viscosity of water.
Personally, I run castrol syntec 5w50, its thin when I need it and thick when I need it. Ive run this oil in just about everything Ive owned, its awesome stuff, an ex of mine had a 78 MGB that was restored the motor had all of 7k on it, I switched it to the 5w50, when I checked it at 4k after the oil change, the oil still looked like I had just poured it out of the bottle. I ran till 6k, the oil still remained golden, but I changed it anyway.
Like was said before, if your car doesnt make any valvetrain noises or knocking, leave the oil be, just use what youve been using. If it ticks a wee bit there will be no harm done by going to a 10w40, not in a 302 w/ over 100k on it anyway.
