Default convertible problem 89 LX

My convertible top is new, the vinyl or whatever it is. However it is really difficult to get it to go up and down. It appears some part of the metal up by the driver's side door is broken, and there is no top cover where the little snaps go in the back for when the top is down to hold it down. It appears to use a zipper on the back window, should this be down before I lower the top?

no, just put the top up and down.

frame may need lubed, or you motor may be weak is only thing i can think
new tops are tight at first and it may just a need a week or two to "relax" and easy up on the motor.

tops also dont really retract fully without pushing on em a little and installing
the cover, mine never really fully retracts as much as it looks like it should either.
