Default Timing light and running hot!

Hey all, a couple of questions here.

First, what brand timing light do you guys use. I have read that there are ALOT of innacurate timing lights on the market. Which ones do you guys use and do they seem accurate to you?

My second question is about my car's temperature freaking out of nowhere. My car used to ALWAYS run exactly at the line under half way, but lately it runs there for a while, and eventually climbs higher (sometimes in traffic, sometimes on the freeway). It's been climbing to the line ABOVE half way at the hottest, but once in a while when it's up there, it just kicks back down to a little below half.

When the car is off and ignition on, the temp guage goes up and down like it's retarded. Not constantly, but randomly enough to make me suspect that there COULD be a problem with it.

I tried replacing the rad cap and it's keeping it a TINY bit cooler. The car hasn't overheated yet, but what temp do the lines represent and is this normal?

Thanks all.

Yeah, I figured that too. Do you need a new gasket for the thermostat housing or just some silicone and gasket adhesive will work?
