1st time 1/4 mile times
went to the track last night and today for my first time on the track, and with this car. My car is an 87, mustang 5.0 convertible 5 speed. It has a k&N air intake, and a mac exhaust. Thats all i have done so far. well here are my times for my first time at the track i hope in not that bad of a shifter lol. Please tell me if these are any good for my stock stang. i changed my tire pressure to 30 PSI after my 2nd run, from a tip from some other stang driver. Also was playing around with launches, and my best launches were with about 1700 rpm on my last two runs. Any other tips i could use??? thanks alot guys hope these are interestings to someone. RE: 1st time 1/4 mile times
Well not to bad for it being your first time. The car should break into the mid 15s easy. From your 60ft times i bet you was spinning alot. Those are my 60ft times with street tires. I have a 91 Vert and when in stock form i was hitting 14.6 @95 MPH. I just got back from track with my new mods and my MPH went up almost 4 mph but my time didnt improve. Street tires stink .. Horse power isnt any good unless you can get it to the ground.

Well, you were improving as the day went on, going from a 17.3 to a 16.1, so that's to be commended.
I have a mostly stock LX coupe, which is much lighter than your vert. My 1st run was a 15.2, and the last time I went, I got it down to 14.7 after changing to BFGoodrich KDW rear tires.
Your mph seems to be a little low. Check your timing. You should be able to run as high as 14 BTDC with no problems, but listen for pinging. Remember to remove the SPOUT connector when you're changing the timing.
As Stinger says, traction is the biggest thing. Whatever you did on your 3rd and 6th run is what you need to be doing on launch. You certainly have to limit how much gas you give it so you don't over-power the tires. Just for comparison, my best 60' is 2.142, and that took over 20 runs to get that.
As for reaction time, if you're waiting for the green light, you're sleeping. Do what OB said, leave when you see the 3rd yellow light come on (wonder where he got that idea? ). I have yet to see the green light come on, because once I see the 3rd yellow, I focus on leaving. By the time you react and the car crosses the light beam, the light will be green. You'll find your r/t times getting a lot closer to .500. You may even redlight once in a while, but that's part of the learning process.
Most of all, keep having fun. That's what it's all about

RE: 1st time 1/4 mile times
Now after reading ur responses, i was waiting for the green light, so i should go on the third yellow???Also i figured out when i was doing my launches that at 2000 rpms with my street tires i was spining out thru my 60'. than i dropped the tire pressure in the back like another guy told me to, and i launched at about 1700-1800 rpms and i got good traction as well as better times. i timed my car last night actually, it was a little off but now its in time. anyother things i should try doing to get it into the 15's for next weekend??? thanks alot guys Brad
