Default flywheels and starters???

My starter went out on my 87 gt last week end. So I went to the parts store and the starter they gave me was not the one I just pulled outta my stang. So we had to dig through a bunch of boxes to find the right one. Basically my starter looks like it allows for a bigger diameter flywheel. Why is this? And what is the diameter of flywheel in my car? Isnt the stock size 10 inches? Does this also mean if i want to replace my clutch I need to know the true diameter of my flywheel?

Ford has used 157 tooth and 164 tooth flexplates and ring gears cant remember what year they switched, think it was when they changed the balance on the 302's, but yours would have the smaller 157 tooth.

Misboxed items happen all the time. Happend to me last week with a halfshaft. Went to 4 different parts stores, I gave them the application (99 taurus AX4N trans), everytime I got the wrong shaft. Eventually, I had to get one from the dealer. But 302 starters havent changed in something like 25 years (?). The only difference will be whether its an auto or stick. I used a starter out of a '79 stang in my '85 (motors out of a 92). It bolted right up and worked with no problems. It did look different, it was bigger and heavier overall, but it got the job done.

And there is no difference between a starter for an automatic car and a starter for a manual car.
I was worried about that when I did a T5 swap so I looked up the part number and its the exact same for an auto and manual.
I was suprised considering the flywheels had a different amount of teeth, 157 vs. 163 or something like that.
