Oh come on................Just get a damm light. If you never timed a car before you sure an an the hell would not know what it would sound like even if you have tuned several "differnt" cars..............
the spray paint job will work like mentioned above but I took a Q-tip and pulled the end off and made a nice little point with it (McGyver style) and spryaed a little pwhit pint on the 14* mark.............It worked well!

Clean your balancer with paint thinner and a rag, rub white chalk on the timing marks and number, and wipe it off. The chalk stays in the grooves and you can see everything perfectly. Here's another idea if you can't afford a timing light...
Materials needed: flash light and razor knife
Procedure:
1. expose the core of the wire on #1 and attach it to your ********
2. have someone start your car
3. everytime that you feel your sack getting shocked, point the flashlight towards the balancer and flick the light on really quick
4. adjust timing as necessary.
