Check out the following link for a more technical discussion of oil filters.
Oil Filter Study

Another page of the same site has some conclusions.
Conclusions Page

The main problem I have had with Fram is that the filter is dry nearly every time I remove one.
This means that all the oil has drained out of the passages, back to the pan.
Each startup has to re-fill the oil passages, due to a poor anti drain-back valve.

I have noticed that I have slightly higher oil pressure with the Mobil filter as opposed to the K&N. The difference is about 5psi.
This indicates that the K&N may have a better filtering capability. There is usually a direct relationship between pressure reduction and filtering ability.

This wouldn't be from a problem with your filter, but a problem with your pressure relief valve in your oil filter spindle assembly on your engine. It's probably stuck closed and there isn't hardly any oil even going through your filter....happens in alot of cars with higher mileage or if you overextend your drain intervals..I used to see it once or twice a week - back when I had a JOB!

The engine has 12,000 miles on it now.
I have not had the issue since switching to K&N/Mobil filters.

Frams are very restrictive compared to other filters. I perfer Motorcraft. Ive heard that they are very similar to Purlator filters.

+1, comes with a lifetime warranty
