picture 4 is sort of a close up of the leak which is on that small portion of tube going from the tank to the filter. its looks to be just a hardened plastic. what kind of fitting would i used to connect to the filter and the tank sending unit if i were to go with a custom braided stainless steel setup?

brutal, something like this did happen to me.
The plastic fuel line between the fuel filter and the metal body side fuel line broke.
I've seen the lines that come from the fuel tank to the filter, as installed on my car. I have not seen them with the tank dropped.
Do the lines from the tank have metal inside? I cannot tell from your pics.
In my case, I went to napa and got a ford fuel line repair kit. There are two sizes, and let me go home and make sure I give you the correct size. It comes with a "barb" fitting to join two plastic fuel lines together. The metal I see in the pics above may be metal barb fittings from the factory.
I know that there was a barb fitting, which looks like a tapered cone with ridges on it, on the body sided fuel line. I.e. I pulled off the plastic flexi line and there was a barb fitting on the end of the metal fuel line attached to the body.
A bosch/industrial heat gun is needed to heat/expand plastic flexi fuel line. Use the high setting.
Standard fuel line will not hold 40psi of fuel for fuel injecton.
Make sure any fuel line you order is "fuel injection approved" and should look like a rubber hose with a plastic hose inside.
Murrays here in detroit had it cut to length.
And Napa has the repair kit which includes hose.
Try to help me understand your pics above so I can help you better.

I believe the type of fitting connected to the fuel filter is called a "fuel line quick disconnect"
I forgot to check the line size last night.
you can take your fuel filter to napa and make sure the fuel line quick disconnect part you are about to buy fits the fuel filter
Off the top of my head, I think you need the 1/4" ford fuel line repair kit of you go to napa.

I had to replace both fuel lines a few months ago, I got the s/s classic tines, they fit pretty good and come with new rubber hoses as well but like the oem clips better

LOL. I had the same thing happen to me a month after I bought my car, believe it or not. Gas wound up dripping onto the scorching exhaust, and creating a lot of smoke...IN THE PARKING LOT OF MY NEW JOB. It was embarrassing as hell, as most folks were driving big-butt Mercedes' and Porches. Then here came the black man with his jalopy. It was rough. Anyway, I had a mechanic re-route the fuel lines, and everything was fine. I have no idea what he did. Just thought I'd share.
