When put in a new oil pan gasket the car set for a while without oil (a week tops) and we we cranked it back up we had a little bit of valve tick but it went away quickly. Id say if you prime the system you should be okay.

to prime the system, you pull the distributor out, and get a socket to fit the oil pump drive shaft, put it on an electric drill and spin it. I usually do this till oil comes out the push rods at least, and the oil pressure guage comes up. then just pop the distributor back in and you are all set.

The distributor is where the spark plug wires all meet at the middle of the engine in the front. IT sets the spark for the engine. and the oil pumpdriveshaft is inside the hole thats opened when you remove the distributor

What happens is the lifters bleed down a little bit, it's no big deal and the ticking will go away after a few minutes. Think about all the people who store thier cars over the winter, they don't re-prime the system every spring. Priming is usually done on a brand new engine so that there is oil in the passages right away at start up. You can prime it, it won't hurt anything but reall won't make a differance. I do reccomend disconnecting the battery and pulling the coil wire, as was mentioned above, just to make sure it is not started on accident.

I am glad I understand this more. I will also be stoaring my car over the winter. Sounds like you reccomend priming the system before I bring it back to life after next winter?
