5.0/AOD Questions ( My First 5.0 )
Hi all,
It's that guy with the '89 740 ex-Turbo-now 5.0 powered volvo wagon again....Thanks to those who replied to my noisy power steering pump question. I didn't like what I heard ( "they all do that " ), but at least I know what to try next ( Mercon 5 ). Anyway, here's another round of questions. The 1990 5.0/HO AOD I have runs great, as far as my novice experience can tell . The wagon is a hoot to cruise around in. Next thing I need to do is get it tuned up, as I don't know when it was done last ( long story, but it's got apx 150k miles, it's been well maintained, with most of the service records ). I have what I think is a lifter click, which occurs pretty much all the time- cold, hot, fast, slow. Otherwise, it starts right up, idles fine. I get about 15mpg, which I'm told is about 7mpg less than what I should be getting with this conversion. I have a 3.73 rear, with a stock ( bebuilt ) AOD w/a shift improver kit:
What would I need to completely tune up this engine ? Best parts for the job ? ( Plugs/wires/ect )
Any advice on how to get the most out of this stock engine ? I don't plan on big modifications, as I need a dependable daily driver that anyone in the family can use.
Can lifters be adjusted or with 150k should I just get them replaced ?
Any other wear items that I should be aware of ( timing chain, ect ) ?
I have stock headers with an '04 SVT Cobra exhaust, which has been cut up to fit under the 740. Fits quite nicely ! Sounds good, too. My goal was to sound like a stock Mustang GT, but I'm told I now sound more like a '69 Vette. I'll settle for that ! If my engine's rated at 230hp/300 lbs stock, how many extra hp and lbs.-ft. might the exhaust add ? All 4 cats and the H pipe were used, with an aftermarket ( better fit ) pair of mufflers ( sorry, can't remember brand ). The car looks totally stock, except for a pair ( side by side ) of LX tips protruding from where the stock Volvo single tip would be.
Electric puller fans ( 4 each, little 6" critters ! ) were used , and they seem to work great- the needle stays right in the middle, even on these recent super hot days...
Enough for now. I appreciate any comments or advice. I think I'm going to like this forum ! Email me at magnificationbill@hotmail.com for some boring pictures...
Sincerely, Bill
