Header gasket question- install in the morning!
Hey guys,
I'm installing a set of BBK unequal 1 5/8ths in a few hours and was wondering what to use as a gasket sealant? I have a set of felpro header gaskets and Permatex copper RTV sealant good for 700* it says. Is this a good enough setup? Any recommendations before I start, any tips or tricks? Thanks all! |
RE: Header gasket question- install in the morning!
I wouldn't use any sealer. I have BBK's and used the gaskets that came w/ them and have had no problems. Just tighten them down equally and you should be fine.
G/L w/ the install. |
RE: Header gasket question- install in the morning!
It gets so hot at the header I doubt the RTV would even hold up.
Soak the gasket for about 1/2 hour in water before installing them. |
RE: Header gasket question- install in the morning!
LOL I can't sleep. Why soak the gaskets in water?
And that's what I figured about the RTV, probably wouldn't do squat. How do I avoid leaks? |
RE: Header gasket question- install in the morning!
Soaking them will expand and then when you tighten it down it should seal better.
Also, retighten the headers bolts after a few runs. |
RE: Header gasket question- install in the morning!
never use rtv of exhaust parts

RE: Header gasket question- install in the morning!
Your RTV may be good up to 700* but exhaust temps in that area could be up to 1100* or higher.

Goodluck |

i must say i think the stock gaskets they come with are garbage, i paid 40$ for some aluminum thick ones from autozone and havnt had a leak compared to the 2 i got with other gaskets

if I soak the gaskets won't water get into the heads while I'm tightening them/squeezing the sh*t out of them?
