Max Horsepower
I couldnt find it in the search, but i found a 1990 stang that has been completely redone, running 10's with a 150 shot of nitrous, but in the description he gave of the engine, he never mentioned doing anything to the bottom end. How much horsepower can a stock 5.0 bottom end handle? Pistons and above sounds like a mean motor, but if it has the stock bottom end in it, that worries me. He would have to be putting down like 4-500 horsepower in a fox for times like that.

I was really a 4.6 guy, but they are too damn expensive, so i am thinking about maybe goin old school. How much does does it cost to put a decent bottom end in a 5.0 roller motor? I could put a water/methanol injection in the sucker and bump the octane up to 120 and then kick up the nitrous, if thats possible. I would like to stay all motor and eliminate the nitrous. Cant you just put a stroker crank and some forged i-beams and go? I could decimate with that car!!

RE: Max Horsepower
They will go to 500rwhp pretty regularly and I've seen them go higher and live for quite some time. Mid-10s seems to be about the limit on a average weight car with a stock shortbock before they split.
Use a power adder and don't bother with adding stroke. An EFI 347 will leave you a little short on your power goals. You can split a block just as easily on a 302/306 and a power adder as you can with a 347 and a power adder.
Unless it's an oil burner, a stock shortblock will get you anywhere you'll get with a fresh shortblock using a stock block. The block is the weak point; not crank, not rods, not pistons, not miles/age.

so a new block with a forged crank and rods then huh? Where is a good place to get a block at that will handle that 8 or 900 hp. I have a 351w ho that i could use, would that be better then a 302? I would have to have a different intake then right? and still a new block though. The 302 will spin higher rpms though wont it?

RE: Max Horsepower
Forged crank is waste with stock 302 block. The stock crank will usually out last a stock block.
Yes 351W is MUCH better block, they're good to 600-700rwhp and dont have the flex problems of the 302
Only the lower half of the intakes is different on 302 vs 351w
302 and 351 are still both push rod engines so 6,000rpm is going to be it for a street engine.
If you want to push 900hp you will need a Dart 4 bolt block in either 302 or 351w, they cost $2k+ just for bare block.

The Dart Sportsman block is currently on sale for $1899 with free delivery at www.adperformance.com. Prices are going up too. I bought mine from Brian at AD Performance 2 years ago for $1750 delivered.
