What air cleaner will fit a stock 85 carb?
I discovered over the weekend that my motorsport front strut brace in fact does not fit with my stock air filter housing. I thought it was just the snorkels that would need to be removed, but it actually doesn't clear the front of the housing by about 1-1/2 inches. The nice aluminum ford air cleaner I bought from summit didn't sit flush on the top of the carb, and if I used a spacer, it would have hit the hood. Anyone used an aftermarket air cleaner (have a part number perhaps) that fit the stock carb without a spacer? I would like a 12 or 14 inch with probably a 3 inch tall element in it. I can't tell from Summit's site if the base plate on any of the ones they offer have the hump on the base to clear the fittings on the top of the carb. I probably would've just searched for a different strut brace, but I already took the box for this one to the dump, so I can't send it back.

I think you're gonna have to modify anything you get to fit that damned carb... it may be a good idea to modify the stock one or to get a cheap drop base and then just modify it to fit. I'ld serously consider buying an old Holley 600 cfm vac secondary carb at a swap meet... there should be a ton going on now... The only other airfilter I could suggest would be to get one of those foam Edelbrock filters. They flow to 1000cfm and have a reusable foam element. They're ugly as sin but it'll get the job done.... This is straight from their site....

Last night on my way home I stopped at an Autozone and they had a 14 inch Edlebrock drop base that fit! $29.99 and I was in business. Bolted on the strut brace and all is good. Now if I can only figure out exactly what made the car run like it was out of gas yesterday, then run fine after sitting for 2 hours I'll be really happy.
