Default alternator heating up w/ign. off

so im pretty clueless on this. i just rebuilt the motor got about everythin ready to b on the street except for breakin in the cam. everythin was working just fine before i took it apart, but now i noticed that when i hooked up the battery that the alternator heats up. what could possibly cause this? this happens when i hook up the battery w/out even running anything

I can only think of two things. There could be a problem with the wiring (ground or perhaps even crossed wires.) It could also be a failing diode.

Those are the only things I can think of off the top of my head.

I was gonna go with failing diode as well, perhaps try taking your alternator off to get it tested. Is it stock? An aftermarket, perhaps a one wire? See if there is also a draw in your car, take off the negative off battery and put a vm between the negative connector and the battery - post.
