Default Need new axles

I just recently had my gears installed; they told me my axles and bearings were shot. Since I didn't know what all it entailed, I didn't have them install it (considering they told me it would be another 2 weeks, and $340 extra dollars just for parts) I now know it would have taken them an extra 10 minutes or so after they had everything apart, but I just wasn't ready for the shop to rape me on something I hadn't done any research on yet. So to my main questions, which kind should I buy, and what spline? Is it a tough job to do at home, and what tools are required? What kind of side effects would I notice if they're as shot as they say they are?
Thanks guys!

Stock carrier - 28 spline.

Might as well get some Moser axles for $240 a pair. Much stronger...

Will do, thanks!
Is the process of installation hard? What is involved?

go to the junk yard and find some rangers or aerostars, pull 2 real short size axles and drums. make the rear 5 bolt for under $75, you can than change the front disks to 5 bolts as well.

they said your axles are no good? hmm well if your not real hard on your car or the axles are horrible, they make whats called an axle saver, its a new bearing/seal that replaces the bearing and seal but moves the bearing closer to the wheel away from where the old bearing did damage to the axle. They cost about $10-20. But yeah I would rather just throw in a new set of axles.

And no its not hard to do this job at all. Once you get the axles, bearings, and seals, all you need is gear oil and a differential cover seal. I changed the bearings and seals on my car in about 30 minutes once the car was off the ground.
