ugh. there are a lot of things you should swap out of the car. this is assuming its a stock 83.
the engine. its crap. the block you could maybe keep around, its a non roller so a cheap fix is the roller conversion(id suggest tho, scrap the block entirely)
the heads are pitiful, they might get you a couple bucks from the recyling yard. if it still has the exhaust manifold, that is a shame. the stock intake manifold, not the best, but its not something in dire need of replacement, there are better ways to spend your 150 bucks.
i switched from the t5 tranny to a tko with a pro5.0 shifter and alum driveshaft, i would hate to go back
the rear end is the less desirable 7.5," if you are serious about wanting to drive this thing, probly best to switch to the 8.8. new it wont break the bank, but you can pick up a whole rear end(and get yourself some 4 wheel disc brakes) in most junkyards for a reasonable rate.
if it hasnt been done, a thourough flushing of the gas tank(or just replace the ****er) is wise, with older cars, there is a high probability that there is some kind of sediment in the tank.
get the car on a lift, and give the underbelly of the beast a very good inspection. unless somebody put subframe connecters on it, there is a good chance that there may be some slight bending or cracking(if there are cracks, this is bad, get them welded shut asap). this is also a good time to clean this area, as it is most likely dirty and grimey as all hell.
the speedo only goes up to 85. GAY. this can be fixed tho, so im willing to look the other way
while under the car, give the fuel and brake lines a good inspection as well.
update the ignition.
the stock suspension is crap.
and thats about all i can think of right now
