Default Starter issuse!

I have an 86 hatch that was converted to an 82 8 cylinder carbed motor and matching tranny by the previous owner, it has longtubes and that's really it for mods.... My issue is that ever since this motor and tranny was installed (second 8) that it has been killing starters. As soon as the starter is installed it makes a loud whining noise (cold or hot same noise) it'll start the car with no problems (except noise) for a while - sometimes a week sometimes a month - no consistant times. Then what it does is start to engage then it lets go and spins freely. What copuld be causing this? Please help!!!!! Aslo new (rebuilt starter) or used starter makes no real difference!

Sounds like maybe a clearance issue between the starter and flexplate, as in too tight. Grab some starter shims from the parts store and put them between the starter and block, just enough to make the noise go away but not too much.

Yea, sounds like the gears aren't meshing correctly.
