Default How long can a motor last that uses oil?

As I've mentioned a time or two, my car uses about a quart of oil every 1k miles. It runs awesome, and the plugs all look an identical shade of grey. Every vehicle I've owned (9 motorcycles and 10 cars) has used oil, but I've never kept them long enough to find out how long they would last. My question is: How long can my car last with regular oil changes, and the occasional blast through the gears? Thanks.

Untill you quit topping it off and run it out of oil.

Thanks for the reply, MC. That's what I've heard...that cars that use oil last a LONG time because everything gets well lubricated. I just wanted some personal testimonies.

I dunno, my best buddy Andy's was using about the same amount of oil and one night he was racing a cobra and it just started blowing smoke and his rings went ka-put.

I dont think that oil consumption is that unusual, just make sure it stays full.

Thanks for the reply, 88. That's always a risk I guess. I've seen broken rings on tight motors too. Hard to say what caused Andy's ring(s) to break. I do wonder though.

You can run it as long as you can keep up with it and dont let it run out. I am not being a samrta** but think of it this way you keep it full and all you have to do for oil changes is swap the filter every so often. You will be keeping the oil fresh lol. But really on a serious note I have driven a vehicle that was useing oil for approximately 75000 miles before I traded it in.

Thanks Onyx. Good advice. I check it about every 300 miles. It doesn't move much in that amount of miles though.

I suspect (and hope) that that will be years from now.

Thanks again, MC. Good info--that's what I wanted to hear.

Although I will say that I'm still gonna change the oil about every 2500 miles, as all that blowby and carbon crystals can't be good to have in the oil.

two of them broke, it looked like the oil just got low and they couldnt take it anymore. He was haulin down the highway about 115 in his fox. The motor had 228,000 miles on it though. So, it had every reason to break. we rebuilt it and amazingly enough, all his cylinders took was a good honing to clean them up
