Default WTF Timing

I bumped my timing up from the 10* it was set on to a measley 11 1/2, even switched to 93 gas. and yet im still getting a pinging around 4500 - 5500 rpms!! What is wrong with this? It still responds sluggish, and i kno 12-13* is like the norm, why can't i do it??
