Does this article have any truth to it?

Just curious, ran across it yesterday when I was looking for a part.

RE: Does this article have any truth to it?
This article is true in regard to older model mustangs possibly exploding in a rear end collision. What could happen is, if the car were hit in the rear, the filler neck for the gas tank could shear off and cause a spark, thus igniting the gas tank and causing an explosion. If your familiar with these cars you probably could understand why if you just open the trunk and look at the gas tank setup.

RE: Does this article have any truth to it?
I read the whole article and my conclusion is that it is a ligitiment article mostly pertaining to the late model mustangs but continues to be a design flaw, however i dont believe there is significant room below the passenger seat for a fuel tank, anyhow, if your concerned over your mustangs safety, install a fuel system that mounts in the trunk and that will eliminate the ability of the fuel system to catch fire and raise it out of the typical crash zone. As HAWK said the neck is out there by itself and is matal so if its sheared it may spark, my suggestion is be aware of whos behind you and drive safely, keep a fire extinguisher in your car, and that driving any vehicle be it a dump truck, a semi, a truck, a suv, a car. or a motorcycle you are at risk, both fromt he road conditions as well as the other drivers on the road, and as tragic as those stories are you cant be afraid constantly of that happening. Personally I wouldn't worry about it too much on the 5.0's.

that article is a bunch of BS...20/20 ran with it not realizing that there were about 5 million Mustangs made with the gas tank like that and less than 100 ever caught on fire....The kid that caused the ruckuss was "test-driving" his Mustang on the freeway and it stalled in the fastlane. He was hit by a big truck doing the speed limit....he could have been in a Volvo, it still would have been a nasty wreck.

in regards to rear end colisions, at highway speeds justa bout any car's gas tank will expode.
this is not just a ford only thing. all new cars are only crash tested up to 35mph, so if you stall on the freeway in your new volvo and someone slams into you goin 75-80, then its goodye.
any 80's car that get rear ended at high speed will suffer catostrophic effects no matter what car it is

This was a problem with Crown Vics for awhile. Finally, Ford admitted there was a problem and altered the gas tanks and surrounding parts so that it wouldn't be as bad.
