Tach Reading is Incorrect

Tach Reading is Incorrect
I have a 140 mph gauge cluster and the tach floats. By float I mean that the tach sometimes stays at 1k rpm. When I know I am turning 2K rpms the tach is at 3K rpm. I replaced the sending unit on the distributor and still the tach floats. I bought a different gauge cluster and the tach still floats and reads higher than actual. What else can I change out to find the cause of this problem?

RE: Tach Reading is Incorrect
buy an Autometer tach. The stock ones just suck plain and simple.
This is why people run a 5" monster tach in their cars for the people always making fun of people running them.
Sometimes when im driving, ill look at my stock tach, it says 1,800 and i look at my autometer and its at 2,400...thats a huge difference.

RE: Tach Reading is Incorrect
I fixed it. I bought a new coil after I discovered that the old coil had a bunch of dirt and grease on the pickup connections for the tach. The tach works good as new now! A $30 fix versus $100 for an aftermarket tach.
